Chapter 3 

The First Level of Reading: Elementary Reading

This chapter start explaining the method of how the americans make an effort to educate all his citizens and this was through literate the people. This was from their beginning as a country and it was one of the base for their democratic way of life they supposedly have now a day.



ABC method: Also know as phonetic method in were the word was recognized by its sounds rather than by its letternames. This method was criticized so two new methods were developed.



Later was developed two new methods:

1) Phonic Method: word was recognized by its sounds rather than by its letter names.

2) Sight Method : recognition of whole words before giving any attention to letter-names or letter-sounds



"Hence, researchers are very active at the present time, and their work has resulted in numerous new approaches to reading instruction. Among the more important new programs are the so-called eclectic approach, the individualized reading approach, the language-experience approach, the various approaches based on linguistic principles, and others based more or less closely on some kind of programmed instruction."



Stages in learning to read: 


First Stage:

Reading readiness

--physical: involves good vision and hearing.

--intellectual: involves a minimum level of visual perception.

--language: involves the ability to speak clearly and use sentence in order.

--personal: involves the ability to work with other children, to sustain attention and follow instruction.

Second Stage:

Reading simple materials

Third Stage:

Rapid progress in vocabulary building and increasing skill in unlocking words through clues.

Fourth Stage:

Refinement and enhancement of skills.
